Standing (left to right): Lindsey Waldron, D.O., Michael Armstrong, M.D., Shelby Steffen, M.D., Josh Larson, M.D., Kyle Gibbens, M.D., Alex McDonald, D.O., Catherine Youssef, M.D. Spencer Steffen, M.D.
Michael armstrong, M.D.
Omaha, NE is home to the Henry Dorley Zoo, Warren Buffet and Michael Armstrong, M.D., where he also received his medical degree from UNMC. If Dr. Armstrong was not a physician, he would be a pilot traveling the world flying his own plane. He enjoys spending time with his family and playing guitar, which is something he mentioned he could not live without. He also mentioned he could live without his phone! A piece of advice from Dr. Armstrong "Life is like a Camera...FOCUS on what's important...CAPTURE the good times...DEVELOP from the negatives...and if things don't work out, take another shot."
josh larson, m.d.
Dr. Josh Larson was born the oldest of 6 younger brothers and 3 younger sisters in Omaha, NE, home of the College World Series (and best taco trucks). He graduated from the University of Nebraska - Omaha and attended medical down the street at UNMC. During college he had a bunch of fun jobs which include; grocery store stock boy, machinist at a factory, baseball umpire, UPS delivery boy, teacher's assistant and lab technician but his dream job when he was in first grade was to be a newspaper delivery boy. Dr. Larson's special talent is that he is a human calculator. After residency, Dr. Larson will practice as an active duty physician for the Air Force.
shelby steffen, m.d.
Dr. Shelby Steffen comes to us from Albion, NE. She graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. Something she will never forget from her last year of medical school is living in a 900 square foot apartment with her husband, infant daughter, crazy cat and 100 lb. dog. Dr. Steffen went into Family Medicine because it is unique in the aspect that you get to see all members of a family and make meaningful relationships with them. There is truly no other specialty that matches the ability to make deep, lasting relationships with your patients. She hopes to return to a small town to practice medicine with her husband, Dr. Spencer Steffen and raise their family.
lindsey waldron, D.o.
Exeter, Nebraska is the hometown of Dr. Lindsey Waldron. They are known for their high school athletic programs - Go TImberwolves! Dr. Waldron enjoys sand volleyball, concerts and of course, Husker Football. If she wasn't completing this survey, she would be sipping coffee and enjoying a good book. When asked why she chose Lincoln Family Medicine Program, she stated she had a wonderful time during her sub-internship rotation. "The faculty and residents made me feel like i was already part of the team. I knew immediately that this was the best fit for me." After residency, Dr. Waldron plans to return to rural Nebraska to practice medicine.
kyle gibbens, m.d.
You can't miss Dr. Kyle Gibbens standing in a crowd, standing 6'4", which also makes finding pants long enough difficult to find. Dr. Gibbens is from Cozad, NE which is located on the 100th Meridian. He received his undergrad degree from the University of Nebraska - Kearney and then moved to Omaha, NE for medical school at UNMC. One memory from medical school Dr. Gibbens will never forget is being able to assist in in an operation to remove a 97 lb. ovarian tumor. When asked what one of his favorite things about Lincoln is, he answered "Hurts Donuts" which is fitting since one of his favorite sayings is "You can't buy happiness. But you can buy donuts, and that's pretty much the same thing." One of the best things that Dr. Gibbens has learned about the program thus far is the scope training and procedure clinic. He stated home call is also a huge benefit - along with the free lunches.
alex mcdonald, D.o.
Dr. Alex McDonald is from right here in Lincoln, NE. He ventured off to Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine for medical school and found himself back in Lincoln for residency and hopes to make this his future practice. Dr. McDonald says Family Medicine is the best specialty and enjoys all aspects of it except the paperwork. A piece of advice he will give to all of his patients is: "There is no medicine better than good honest living!" In his spare time, he enjoys riding his bike, fishing and listening to music and collecting vinyl records. One of his favorite two bands is from right here in Nebraska, Ro Hempel Band, the other is Let Loose. When asked which rotation he is most looking forward to, Dr. McDonald said "all of them."
spencer steffen, m.d.
Dr. Spencer Steffen is from Crofton, NE which is near Lewis & Clark Lake. He attended Creighton University and attended medical school across town at UNMC. An interesting medical school memory is he gave himself rhabdomyolysis working out before medical school graduation. Thankfully, he recovered just enough to walk for his diploma, albeit with a slight limp. When he is not practicing medicine, he is flying (he has his pilot's license). When asked what he likes about the program so far, Dr. Steffen answered "LMEP is an awesome program because i can be doing any number of things every day including rounding on hospital patients, seeing newborns, delivering babies, training on endoscopies, and seeing patients in the clinic, nursing home or ER."
catherine youssef, m.d.
Dr. Catherine Youssef was born and raised in Toronto, Canada which is known for their diversity and multiculturalism. She received her medical training from the University of Medicine & Health Sciences in St. Kitts. Be careful when you say "Dr. Youssef" you could get an answer from her or her husband, Dr. Gabriel Youssef who is a 3rd year resident here. When Dr. Youssef was younger, she wanted to be a hairdresser but now as an adult, if she wasn't a physician, she would be a food critic, interior designer or stay-at-home mom. Dr. Youssef had their second daughter just previous to starting residency. Needless to say, she is very busy. Dr. Youssef stated she enjoys the sense of community that Lincoln brings and how calm it is compared to the bustle of a city.
