For Philip Stark, MD, medicine is a family tradition—but it’s also a career rooted in connection, curiosity and helping people every day.
Dr. Stark grew up in a family of physicians, following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was drawn to medicine because it combines his love of science with the opportunity to make a direct difference in people’s lives. Family medicine was a natural fit, giving him the opportunity to look beyond a single concern or diagnosis and truly get to know his patients and their stories.
Dr. Stark especially enjoys the hands-on side of family medicine, including in-office procedures such as joint injections, skin biopsies, and suturing. Being able to address a concern right in the primary care setting—and often save patients the time and wait of seeing another specialist—is one of the aspects of family medicine he finds particularly rewarding.
A graduate of the Lincoln Family Medicine Residency Program, Dr. Stark was excited to return as a member of the faculty. He enjoys working alongside the residents, faculty, and staff, and looks forward to helping provide new residents with the same positive experience he had during his own training.
When it comes to giving advice to residents, Dr. Stark says to treat everyone with respect. He encourages residents to take the time to get to know their patients and coworkers on a personal level. Building those relationships not only makes the work more enjoyable but also helps you do your job more effectively.
Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, Dr. Stark moved to Lincoln at age 9. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with High Distinction from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln before receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Medicine in Omaha. He completed his family medicine residency at Lincoln Family Medicine Residency Program.
Dr. Stark enjoys playing piano and drums, and listening to music. During his time at UNL, he was a drummer in the Husker pep band. He also enjoys building LEGO creations, playing soccer, golfing, cooking, and traveling—so far visiting 20 countries and 21 states. He and his brother also run Stark Creations, a business specializing in handcrafted kitchen and outdoor knives.
