Tyson Carlson, MD
Third-year Resident

Tyson Carlson, MD, attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and received his Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences. He obtained his Medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Dr. Carlson is no stranger to the area having grown up in Valparaiso, Nebraska, about 20 miles away. He likes Lincoln because it offers many benefits of a larger city while still maintaining the feel of a small town.

Dr. Carlson’s decision to become a doctor stemmed from wanting a career that allowed him to help others while continuing to learn about physiology and pathology, two areas of interest. The variety of patients and illnesses he saw daily, the importance of preventive medicine, and the relationships formed with his patients drew him to Family Medicine. He enjoys preventive medicine because of his desire to keep patients healthy so they can enjoy quality of life. His advice to patients is to be honest with their healthcare provider, and to stay active, both physically and mentally.

When choosing a residency program, Dr. Carlson was familiar with the excellent educational opportunities that Lincoln Family Medicine Program offered, its knowledgeable and committed faculty, and the positive culture within the organization. He likes that the Program offers flexibility in the second and third years of residency so that residents can tailor their educational experiences to meet their practice goals. After residency, he hopes to practice family medicine in Nebraska and near family.

When he’s not busy taking care of patients and learning, Dr. Carlson enjoys spending time with his wife, Ashley, and their son, Braxton, being outdoors, exercising, reading, watching sports, and visiting wineries/breweries. Before he pursued medicine, he was a Sports Information Director at the University of Nebraska Athletic Department and had considered careers as a coach, meteorologist, or investigative journalist. He’s a big fan of the Nebraska Huskers, the Red Sox, and the Lakers. He says his parents are his role models, and his greatest accomplishment so far in life is marrying his wife and starting their family.
